Peacock Bass Fishing Gains Popularity
Peacock bass fishing used to be available mainly in South America, but today many peacock bass are finding their way into North America, particularly southern Florida, giving those of us in the U.S. a shot at some great peacock bass fishing.
Peacock bass fishing is becoming popular in Florida, and there are a number of opportunities to catch them. These fish are technically not bass, although its basic shape resembles the largemouth bass. Peacock bass are really a member of the cichlids family, known among tropical fish anglers. There are four types of peacock bass - Venezuela, Colombia, Peru and Brazil - and two of these fish have migrated into southern Florida, enabling you to experience peacock bass fishing there.
The butterfly pavon is the most colorful member of the peacock family, and a common catch for those fishing. They typically weight two to four pounds, but can grow larger than ten pounds.
Peacock bass fishing provides you with the opportunity to catch some very beautiful, colorful fish. Peacock bass have varying shades of green, blue, orange and gold, and are known for their black, circular "eye spot" on their caudal fin. This spot closely resembles the tail plume of a peacock.
When fishing for peacock bass, be aware that they tend to be more aggressive than other bass varieties. They will even go after bait that is the same size they are. Those peacock bass fishing know that these aggressive fish are likely to break lines and destroy tackle. They challenge the angler!
Peacock bass fishing in Florida is good year-round, but you'll find the largest fish between February and the end of June.
